To avoid confusion it is usually best to wait and amend a return after the IRS and/or State has accepted the original return and you have received your refund, if applicable.
First, PRINT a copy of the originally filed return (both Federal and State, if applicable); this will be your only record of the return as it was filed once you make the corrections for the amendment. This can be done in the Online return by clicking the My Return button in the lower left hand corner, choosing and then clicking Return in the window that appears. Choose the number of copies you want and click the blue Print button. Desktop users click , and make the appropriate selection in the window that appears. If this is a new return (i.e. you did not originally file through TaxAct from this account), first enter the information so the return mirrors what is shown on your originally filed, printed copy and then follow the steps below to complete the amended return.
Return to the Q&A interview and modify/add/delete the information that needs amending. Keep in mind that items adjusted on the Federal return may automatically transfer information to the State return. Make a note of each item you are changing and the reason for each change as you will need these notes to complete Form 1040X.
NOTE: Amendments can not be completed on smaller devices, like a tablet.
If you receive an error when accessing Amend Federal Return that states you must first complete the filing steps prior to amending the return, go to the Filing tab and click Print Return. You will need to go all the way through this process until it actually prints the return (you do not need to print on paper, just clicking to view it is sufficient). Once you do this, you can go back to the Filing tab and click Amend Federal Return to continue.
The amended return, Form 1040X, will need to be printed when completed and mailed to the IRS. Attach any accompanying documents that may be required. These would be any forms created in the return due to the changes made, or any documentation that would support the changes made (e.g. corrected W-2 form). Amended returns cannot be e-filed.
With most states, at the end of the process you will be prompted to print the amended form and will be provided with the mailing address to send the form. If you are not prompted to print your amended return, you will need to click Filing and proceed through the Mail Paper Return steps to print and mail your amended return.
To file the amended return, for most states you must mail a paper return. If the state allows electronic filing of the amended return, this option will be available in the filing steps. Note. There will be a separate charge for electronically filing the amendment as it is a separate return.
Anyone can file an amendment with TaxAct, even if they used a different provider or mailed in their original return. An amendment should only be filed if the IRS or state has already accepted your return and you need to make changes due to an error or omission.
If you did not file your original return with TaxAct, TaxAct will not have your original figures. This means you must re-create your return as it was submitted to the IRS or state. Once your return looks like the original, then you can begin the amendment process.
